Gentlemen, and ladies… Start your engines!

No this isn’t a post about the Indy 500.  Well, not really.  Although, just for gee-whiz, the Indy 500 is turning 100 this weekend.  Even though I grew up 30 miles South of Indianapolis, I’ve never been to a 500 in my life.

What the 500 brings to my mind, is one of the most significant holidays of the year, Memorial Day.  That and Danica Patrick, but that’s another subject altogether…

It only seems right we should take the time to remember those who couldn’t be here with us as we kick off the beginning of another brilliant summer…  Picnics, barbecues, vacations, travel and fun!!!!

So, look at it as it’s intended.  Take the time to contemplate, honor and appreciate the sacrifices of the nation’s fallen, then get out and have your best summer ever.

  1. Beautiful picture with a beautiful meaning! Remember……

  2. Hi Dewayne,

While Memorial Day was founded and woven into our nation’s culture and heritage specifically to honor those who died in foreign battles, because they wanted to distinguish it from Civil War commentary when that War and strife was still fresh in the minds of Americans, since 911, we can choose to alter that purpose, and additionally honor our heroes and heroines who died here protect our nation.

Thank you for the pertinent reminder. We GET to enjoy all our BBQs because of them.

    • Absolutely. The scope and purpose has been altered repeatedly to reflect “police actions”, soldiers and civilians fallen for the country, and those fallen as victims of terrorist attacks, both uniformed and civilian. Once again displaying the complexities of obeying the “letter of the law” vs. “original intent”. Veteran’s Day, or at least the sacrifice of the nation’s walking wounded, has also merged into most modern American observation during this national holiday. But, herein lies the beauty of tradition, we can choose to observe, in whatever way we choose, to honor our citizens who have sacrificed for the good of the country. No matter how a person chooses to memorialize the sacrifices of all of those who have sacrificed for this nation and its freedoms, enjoy the Federal holiday.

  7. Thanks for the reminder about Memorial Day. As a former U.S. Air Force veteran, I’m very appreciative of your kind words. The photo of all the flags was a super nice touch too!
